1. You don't post when your audience is looking

You might be posting at a time when your audience is not looking. If you have an Instagram account that targets people in the United States, for example, they will likely be online during certain times of day and less so at others.

For instance, if most of your followers are college students who do not work outside jobs then it stands to reason that they would be online during the day when they are not in class or studying.

If you post at night, then your posts will likely have less engagement than if you had posted them during the daytime when most of your followers were online.

To find out when your audience is looking, use a tool like Iconosquare or Sprout Social. These tools allow you to see when your followers are most active on Instagram and, as a result, what times of day you should be posting content.

You can also use Sprout Social's Instagram report which will give you insights such as; the time of day your followers are most active on Instagram, when they're most likely to engage with your content (e.g., likes, comments, saves), and which posts are resonating the most with your audience.

2. Your captions are not engaging

The next reason your posts might not be getting as much attention is that the captions are not engaging enough.

When a user lands on your post, they want to know that there will be something of value for them if they engage with it. If you have an interesting caption then this can entice users to spend more time looking at and interacting with your post.

Some things to consider when writing captions include:

  • Using interesting and eye-catching emoji.
  • Asking questions that require a response from your followers.
  • Use quotes or lyrics that are relevant to your post.
  • Be creative with the text you use.

If you're not sure how to get started, try brainstorming a list of questions you could ask your audience. For example, if you have an account that sells nail art supplies then asking "What's the best beauty DIY project you've done recently?" might get people talking and sharing their experiences with others on Instagram who are interested in this topic too.

Try to avoid using words like 'promo' or 'sale' in your captions as this can often turn users off. People are more likely to engage with posts that seem like they are personal and not just a sales pitch.

Another thing to keep in mind is the length of your caption. If it's too long then people might not bother reading it all the way through. Try to keep your captions short and sweet, but still pack a punch.

3. Low-Quality Posts

Another reason you might not be getting as much engagement on your posts is that the quality of those posts might not be as good as others.

This could be for a number of reasons, including:

  • Using poor image editing tools
  • Taking photos with bad lighting
  • Only posting images that show off the product or service you're selling (rather than other aspects of your life).

To improve the quality of your posts, consider using a better editing tool than the one that comes standard with Instagram. There are many different apps out there that can help you edit your photos to make them look more professional.

Another thing to keep in mind is the type of content you're posting. If all of your posts are pictures of your products or services then you're missing out on a whole world of opportunity.

4. You're Inconsistent

The fourth reason your posts might not be getting as much attention is that you're inconsistent in your posting.

If users come to expect a couple of posts from you each day, and then all of sudden they don't see anything for over two weeks, they will likely forget about your account altogether.

If you are, then this will likely lead to shadowbanning. To get around this, try being more selective with the hashtags you're using in your posts. Instead of simply adding a bunch of tags that describe what your post is about (e.g., #travel), only add tags that are relevant to each individual post (e.g., #italy).

Another thing to avoid when trying to get around the shadowban is to use automated tools that like or comment on other users' posts. These services are against Instagram's terms of service, so they will likely lead to your account being shadowbanned if you're using them too often.

If none of these tips work then you might want to consider reducing the frequency with which you post on Instagram.

This might seem counterproductive, but it's actually a good way to show that you're an active member of the community without being too overbearing or inappropriate with your posts.
